#BETHERE – Suicide Prevention

By Sneha Gupta (NMIMS Indore)

“Suicide doesn’t end the chances of life getting worse; it eliminates the possibility of it ever getting any better”

Suicide is more than a mental health problem now a days. It affects not only individual but also society at large. In a last two decades suicide rate has increased from 7.9 to 10.3 per 100000. Around to one study 8lakh people die every year.

Do you ever wonder what are the reasons behind suicide being committed? How mental disorders connected with suicide? What makes a person end his life? Is there any solution? How extreme person’s mind is effected which results in suicide?

These are all questions which come to our mind by this topic and this is extremely serious issue which needs to be addressed.

Firstly let’s see what are the reasons behind suicide-

  • Major psychiatric illness (e.g. depression, bipolar disorder etc)
  • Losing hope or will to live
  • Significant losses in person’s life
  • Unbearable mental pressure or physical pain
  • Substance abuse (alcohol, drugs etc)

There are many more reasons.

So, can you see one common thing in these reasons i.e. it’s all controlled mentally and can it be controlled or not?

Suicide is a social problem in our country and mental health is equally important. It is the individual act and determined by many social factors. Divorce, dowry, love relation, inability to get married, and major reasons of women committing suicide rape, threats, sexual assault, domestic violence etc. And major reasons of men committing suicide are poverty, unemployment, debts etc.

Why suicide is being committed? There are various factors that come into play. If person is mentally harassed and he is very much alone where he can’t control his emotions there comes suicide thoughts. In today’s world we face many challenges and our lives have very much hectic schedules that we may end up our day with much pressure on our mind. Either it’s workload or social pressure. This is a reason where our mental health becomes progressively worse. These days our youth is pretty much engaged on social networking sites which creates much pressure on their mental as well as physical health. There are many cases of suicide where teens are caught in cyber bullying traps that results in depression. Major reasons of young generation that results in suicide are study pressure, peer pressure, bad company, failures etc.

What is depression theory and why mental health is very important?

Depression is a mood disorder that causes a feeling of sadness and loss of interest. It affects our mind how we feel, think, behave, and react. In a state of depression individual starts feeling lonely. He prefers to disconnect from the outer world and starts living in his own world. Depression results from many factors when person becomes intolerable to the pressure and that pressure starts troubling him he goes into the state of depression. Doctors suggest some treatment of depression and also advice to do yoga and meditation. There are many camps being organised to get rid of this issues.

Why mental health is very important?

In today’s world with full of stress and pressure and hectic schedule person needs to be calm and relaxed for their mental well being. In a busy schedule mind needs a break of freshen up then only mind will work and thought process will start. Mental health is important at every stage of life from childhood to adulthood. Special care and attention needs to be taken to handle stress and make wise choices.

How to handle person with mental illness?

  • Providing them with proper personal care and regular check-up.
  • Performing yoga and meditation
  • Don’t leave the person alone and try to engage with them properly.
  • Be polite and honest to them
  • Avoid confrontation.
  • Give the emotional support.
  • Take them to a fresh environment.

#BETHERE- this hastag is an initiative for the person with mental illness with the message that we stand together with them for help. We will actively participate and try to help them to get rid of stress and not to leave them alone.

At last we came to conclusion and the only message i want to give here is that we should come together for a good cause , awareness camps should be arranged for how to deal with stress, yoga and meditation camps should be organised for mental well being.

Social message –

Don’t try to insult anyone, always appreciate someone’s work and always support them in their bad times.

Even a simple smile can help them to deal with a stress.

“WHAT MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS IS MORE SUNLIGHT, MORE CANDOR, AND MORE UNASHAMED CONVERSATION”
